Postcards with Purpose

I sat down in the most adorable and welcoming coffee shop in town. This place has been recommended to me time and time again, but that story is for a different post. As I sipped my cold brew, taking in the amazing art on the walls, here comes Renae with her arms full of notebooks and a package of Postcards with Purpose (for me? Awesome!) and the most beautiful curly hair! I could tell instantly that this was going to be a good interview.

Urban Gossip: Tell me about yourself and your business...

Renae Schley: Well it all started when my eldest was graduating high school and we had so many graduation parties to go to and I was trying to think of personalized gifts that I could bring. I had heard of similar ideas but couldn’t find exactly what I had in mind. I finally had time to sit down with a graphic designer and bring my vision to life. Postcards with Purpose are interactive, gift-able postcards that support social causes.

UG: What's the current cause you are supporting?

RS: A portion of every sale helps send cookie care packages to foster kids who are now pursuing higher education. Fewer than 3%of former foster youth will complete a college degree and I hope to give them a bit of encouragement in that pursuit.

UG: So these are your original designs?

RS: Yes! They’re inspired by current trends in stationary and they come ready to mail with stamps so all you need to do is fill it out.

UG: How long has Postcards with Purpose been around?

RS: Just since this year! We are hitting the ground running and can’t wait to see what adventures are ahead of us.

UG: What has surprised you most about your business so far?

RS: Not a lot, really. It has been a little surprising how much work it takes to create sales when your niche market is relatively small. People love the idea and love to engage so that is a great way to get the ball rolling.

UG: Who is your market?

RS: Mainly parents of college kids who don’t mind putting together a cookie-care package. As parents of college kids we just want to take care of our kids but the effort of cooking and baking fresh cookies all the time doesn’t happen for most of us. So I tell people you can always use online services or go to a local bakery and ship them from there.

UG: So are you sending your college kid lots of cookies?

RS: Well, my mother-in-law sends more. Which is another option for sending cookies! Instead of asking for someone’s secret recipe just send the postcard and have them ship out some delicious baked goods.

UG: What are your goals for your business in the next year?

RS: I want to spread the word about Postcards with Purpose. I want as many people as possible to know what a great option this is. My ultimate mission is to be able to share care packages with people who don’t have anyone sending anything. Beyond that, I have dreams to support other causes with more products in the future. I would love to support foster kids who have aged out of the system and don’t have anyone to support them from there on. Only 3% of foster kids continue to complete a degree and there are several contributing factors but the lack of support as they grow up diminishes and I would love to be able to help out.

UG: Where does your passion for foster kids come from?

RS: I have always had a passion for them. Growing up I lived near a foster home so maybe that’s part of it. As a mom I am very involved, so I really feel for kids who don’t have that. There’s not stage of childhood that is easy without parents but going through this process I just really feel for these kids that are doing it alone. I am in awe of them.

UG: How do people find Postcards with Purpose?

RS: I have an Etsy Shop, I have Facebook, Instagram.. all @PostcardswithPurpose

UG: What is something that people don’t know about you?

RS: Hmmmm…… I’m a pretty open book. I think people are surprised to learn that I have a college-age kid, a high schooler and an elementary schooler, too.
